Course Descriptions:

 

Introduction to Coaching    (approx:  3 weekends    clock hours:  60/hrs)

This is a concise and in-depth introduction to the art, science, and business of Coaching.  Designed specifically to give participants a working understanding of the industry of coaching, you will have plenty of hands-on experience in class.  You will learn about the origins of the profession and discover how you can work with clients and make this a career.  Class time will consist of lecture, supervised practical work, and two outside projects which will be reviewed during class.
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

A.    Understand the history and the current profession of coaching.
B.    Fully educate the client and public regarding Coaching.
C.    Consider working professionally with clients by becoming a Coach.

 

Life Coaching     (approx:  2 weekends        clock hours:  60/hrs)

This course extensively covers the profession of Life Coaching giving the student the tools that are necessary to enter this business.  You’ll learn what life coaching IS, how to coach yourself and others effectively, how to create and sustain a successful coaching practice, the difference between therapy and coaching, and numerous NLP and communication techniques to effectively help your clients achieve their goals.
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

A.    Identify obstacles and remove them.
B.    How to uncover your client’s potential.
C.    Build rapport and develop successful strategies for the client.
D.    Understand vision and mission.
E.    Work professionally with clients.

 

Business Coaching          (approx:  2 weekends        clock hours:  60/hrs) 

This course was created to give further information about the techniques and opportunities available in the field of Business Coaching.  We will approach this class by actually coaching ourselves and each other on our own businesses (or planned businesses).  We utilize group work frequently to illustrate the concepts of business coaching.  We also cover possible Coaching Models to enter this field, where to find corporations and contracts, and how to market yourself as a coach or consultant.
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

A.    Have a clear vision and mission for their own business.
B.    Know how to contact corporations, departments, and organizations to coach.
C.    Direct methods to coach clients.
D.    Work professionally with organizations.

 

Counseling vs. Coaching Skills    (approx:  1 weekend        clock hours:  40/hrs) 

In this course the student will gain a comprehensive understanding of the difference between the counseling models and coaching models.  Problems vs. goals, the past vs. the future, and the sickness therapy model vs. the Human Potential model will be discussed.  We will learn about counseling and coaching skills – their similarities and differences- and deeply explore techniques of both.  SOAP and proper record keeping, client confidentiality and professionalism are the subject of this course.
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

A.    Create and maintain client information and goal strategies
B.    Know what your scope of practice includes
C.    Create a professional system for client management.
D.    Have a working knowledge of the history of therapy and coaching
E.    Work professionally with medical, community and business professionals

 

Business Skills               (approx:  2 weekends        clock hours:  60/hrs) 

You can know all the therapeutic techniques and have amazing chemistry with people but if you do not have business skills, your practice will not survive.  This course is designed to maximize your success.  You will learn how to select a legal structure for your business, what forms to fill out and where, how to incorporate, where to look for office space, how to set up a book-keeping system, business taxes, whether or not to take credit cards, make a website, how to decide what to charge, and so much more we can’t possibly fit it into this space!  Everyone will design a business plan in class.
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

A.     Make a solid Business Plan.
B.     Know what steps need to be taken and when to take them.
C.   Have a 5 year growth plan for your business.
D.   Know how to legally set up your business, practice, firm, or center

 

Ethics & the Law              (approx:  1 weekend        clock hours:  20/hrs)

There are many issues which are out of the scope of practice for coaches and many times an ethical situation will come up in the course of your career.  This course gives the student a clear idea of what is and what is not acceptable standards of practice.  Various questionable ethical situations will be covered so you will know what is legally and ethically expected as a professional representing this field.

Note:  Complementary Counselors have to be registered by the state of Colorado as “unlicensed psychotherapists” before they can see clients but it is not mandatory for coaches.  However, if you plan to do Life Coaching it is recommended you become registered as well.  Test preparation and the Dora test taking is optional (but recommended) for this course.  The fee to apply to the Dora Database is an additional fee
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

A.     Know what the legal responsibilities of our profession.
B.     Comply to the Standards of Practice as defined by governing bodies.
C.   Know when to refer and to what outside professionals.
D.   Understand how to handle difficult ethical situations.
E.     Become registered by the state of Colorado and begin to coach clients

 

Marketing Your Practice          (approx:  2 weekends        clock hours:  60/hrs)

This is an exciting course where you will learn all about ways to get clients.  The student will understand the difference between advertising vs. publicity.  You will learn that you are now in the business of self promotion and we’ll explore what may hold you back.  We’ll learn some of the myths of small wellness or coaching businesses and why you need to approach your business in a revolutionary way.  Branding, marketing materials, and indentifying YOUR customer will be covered.  You’ll find out what you MUST have to start your business and what not to waste your money on.  Numerous examples will be given.
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

A.    Develop a marketing plan for your business.
B.    Design a business name, brochure, and business card in class.
C.    Understand WHY people buy, and why they will buy from you.
D.    Various ways to locate and contact your ideal customer

 

Supervised Internship        (10 clients      approx:  60/hrs)

I believe that actually planning and conducting sessions, with a mentor to guide and encourage you, is essential to building confidence in your abilities and the skills you need to succeed in your own practice.  Students are required to see 10 clients from the community and you will plan and conduct the entire session.  Each client session will be followed by a session with your mentor advising you and guiding you.  Upon completion of your internship, and signing off by your mentor, you will be ready to see clients professionally on your own.
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

A.    Have confidence in your ability to handle client sessions.
B.    Get personal experience with various issues and different populations.
C.    Keep exceptional client and session records.
D.    Create session plans for specific outcomes.
